EXCRUCIATOR Signs with Heavy Artillery Records
Written by Plague

HEAVY ARTILLERY RECORDS is pleased to announce the signing of Portland, OR based extreme thrash purveyors EXCRUCIATOR.

ExcruciatorUnsatisfied with current trends and the overdone "core" music that was being heard throughout Portland, EXCRUCIATOR was formed to help revive the spirit and values of true heavy metal, long-since lost in the Pacific Northwest. Initially starting as a side project, the concept was hatched when guitarist/vocalist Chris Birkle proposed the idea of starting a faster, heavier, traditional metal band to long-time friend and fellow guitarist Josh Kay. The two agreed and during the winter of 2008 convinced the destroyer of strings, Craig Bridenbeck, to join on bass. Not content to sit idle while searching for a drummer, the trio began writing original material and recorded a rough one song demo using a drum machine. The demo reached the ears of drummer Marcus Hartford who quickly convinced the band with his thunderous beats that he was the right man for the job. The four found instantaneous cohesion and continued writing new material while rehearsing frequently.

Within a few months EXCRUCIATOR had built a solid repertoire of original songs and by the summer of 2009 the band entered the studio to record their first proper demo. The eight-track demo quickly gained favor amongst the Portland metal crowd and this growing notoriety allowed the four to acquire gigs with national acts such acts as Forbidden, Cauldron, Enforcer, and Witchaven amongst others. Eventually, the band’s hard work and networking allowed for them to be heard and ultimately signed by New York-based HEAVY ARTILLERY RECORDS, who upon hearing the band, were immediately convinced that what EXCRUCIATOR had to offer was a cut above the throng of young traditional metal acts whose demos flood the label's mail box.

DRUNKEN BASTARDS Guitarist Diagnosed with Cancer
Written by Plague
Thursday, 05 August 2010 12:54

Pete FireA statement from Hungarian metalpunks DRÜNKEN BASTARDS reads:

"Pete Fire, the founding guitarist of Drünken Bastards, has been diagnosed with cancer a couple of weeks ago. The treatments have started already and the doctors, family and his friends are confident that he’s going to get better. So far, he has been taking it good, but the whole treatment could take up to six months. This means that the band had to cancel all the shows which were booked for autumn. Of course, we won’t stop working and together we decided to write our third upcoming album and to make up for all the canceled shows in spring after Pete gets better. Hope for him to get better and meanwhile wait for the second album, Horns Of The Wasted, which will be release on Hells Headbangers on August 31st. Of course Pete’s other band Bridge To Solace has also decided to cancel their last shows and wait for Pete to get better, hence the next spring won’t go easy on nuclear hardcore and metal/punk attacks."

The second release from Midwest thrashers, Vindicator, combines elements of Bay Area thrash with the sound of Anthrax to make for a great an album reminiscent of 1980s thrash.  "The Antique Witcheries" go back to the heart of thrash with speedy raw riffs and plenty of in-your-face guitar solos.  The drums are solid and provide excellent beat for the groovy old school thrash sound found on this release.  Vocally, it's strong and rough and fits with the overall raw feel of the album.  The group chorus chants make their way here and there throughout the album and help to give this release its old school feel.  This album is great for fans of 80s thrash...such as Anthrax, Exodus, and Dark Angel.

CD Review: Children of Technology “It’s Time to Face the Doomsday”
Written by Allison1710

Children of Technology:

DeathLord Astolfi - Vocals
Goddess of Hammering Chaos - Drums
Splatterhead - Guitars
ThermoNuclearThrashard - Bass

Cover ArtTrack Listing:
1.New Enemies to Hunt
2.It's Time to Face the Doomsday
3.No Man's Land
4.Racing Through the Valley of Death
5.Nuclear Armed Dogs
6.No Fuel... No Hope!!!
7.Escape From the Danger Zone
8.Screams From the Earth

Italian thrashers Children of Technology make their first full-length debut with this collection of letters from the apocalypse. “It’s Time to Face the Doomsday” combines thrash and speed metal, as well as a healthy dose of crust punk. Fans of bands like Discharge, Toxic Holocaust, Onslaught, and Venom will be really pleased with this release.

There are no slow songs (don’t be fooled by Screams From the Earth); the record doesn’t slow down or give the listener a break. It’s a fist-pumping, headbanging album; deep/metaphorical lyrics lovers can look elsewhere. It contains all the energy and crudeness of punk, but without the sketchy sound quality. It’s got some surprisingly well-put together guitar solos, if not entirely technical (Nuclear Armed Dogs and Escape From the Danger Zone). DeathLord Astolfi’s vocals are gritty, dirty, and get the job done well. While not as heavy as Motörhead, the music definitely takes its cues from them; punky drums, rock ‘n roll guitars, and sandpapery vocals. This is not an experimental album. The tracks stick to the same general crusty sound.

If you’re at all like me, you are too young to have known the early crossover bands in their heyday. I like to think Children of Technology could sort of be my Suicidal Tendencies. That being said, the sound itself is not completely new, but I find that I don’t really mind.  “It’s Time to Face the Doomsday” is well done and honest.

JUNGLE ROT INTERVIEW / LIVE REVIEW
Written by SweetSinz
Thursday, 05 August 2010 12:06

Jungle RotAfter watching death metallers Jungle Rot put on a brutal show in Detroit on Aug. 1, 2010, lead singer and guitarist, Dave Matrise and I sat down to talk about life on the road and the ups and downs they’ve encountered over the years.

Jungle Rot has been around for over a decade. Formed in 1994, the Wisconsin death metallers know its business before pleasure. Dave Matrise says about band life, “We’ve been touring for so long everyone knows they have a job to do. No partying before the show…that is saved for after.”

Jungle Rot has played in Europe and when asked what it’s like touring there compared to here Dave comments, “People in Europe treat you with a lot of respect. It’s much more businesslike in the States. Everyone is out to make a dollar and that takes a lot of the fun out of making music. Sometimes you have to struggle with the club owners to get paid…they don’t like to pay you.” They’ve toured with some big names in Europe and in the States: Cannibal Corpse, Vader, and Black Dahlia Murder to name a few. Dave says, “Those were some of the best times touring.”

It’s clear keeping a band together is hard work. “Many don’t appreciate the hard work and sacrifice we make.” says Dave. As I looked around the white van the band tours in, it’s easy to see the sacrifice they make. The guys go on tour all over the U.S. They sleep in the van, take turns driving, and their diet consists of bologna sandwiches and Coca Cola. Dave is married and credits his wife with helping support the band and keeping things running at home while he is out on the road. Although he doesn’t have children, he does have three dogs which he considers his “babies”.

Dave can’t imagine doing anything other than being a singer/guitarist/songwriter. He says his favorite part about being in a band is performing live, “It’s a rush to perform live. Nothing else compares to it….it’s a natural high.” When not ripping up the microphone and shredding his guitar you can find Dave hunting. Jokingly, Dave says, “I would be a full time hunter if I could.”
